Bharat Biotech’s corona vaccine Covaxin is expect to get the approval of the World Health Organization (WHO) this month. The WHO has so far given emergency use to vaccines manufactured by major US pharmaceutical companies Pfizer-BioNtech, Johnson & Johnson, Moderna, China’s Sinopharm and Oxford-AstraZeneca. Covaxin is one of six vaccines that have receive emergency use approval from India’s drug regulator and are being use along with Covishield and Sputnik V in a nationwide vaccination programme.
Bharat Biotech submits required documents for WHO’s emergency use list.
Approval from WHO is likely this month. The Center had told the Rajya Sabha in July that Bharat Biotech has submitted all the documents required for the WHO’s Emergency Use List (EUL) by July 9 and the global health body has started the review process. Let us tell you that Covaxin is not a part of WHO’s emergency use list and for this reason the Covaxin use in India is not recognize by many countries.

According to WHO guidelines, Emergency Use Listing (EUL) is the process by which new or unlicensed products are approve for use in times of public health crisis.
Covaxin will get WHO approval this week.
There have been reports of WHO approval for Covaxin in the past as well. In July itself, it was told that Covaxin was going to get the green signal in the next few weeks. However, that did not happen then. Then it was told that this is likely to happen in August. Now it is being said that this week Covaxin will get WHO approval. Bharat Biotech said last month that it has supplied 7.5 crore vaccines so far.
