The government-appointed an inquiry panel after 105 children died in a month at JK Lone Government Hospital in Kota, Rajasthan. The team of experts has stated in their report that children have been killed due to hypothermia (body temperature imbalance). Lack of inadequate facilities in the hospital may also be the reason.
The committee constituted by the Government of Rajasthan to ascertain the cause of child deaths confirmed in its report that infants died due to hypothermia.
Hypothermia: It is an emergency when the body temperature falls below 95 F (35 ° C). The average body temperature is 98.6 F (37 ° C).
The report said that the children in the hospital continued to die due to cold, and there was not enough life-saving equipment here.
Newborns should have a body temperature of 36.5 ° C, so they were kept on warmers, where their temperature is average. However, there was a shortage of warmers working in the hospital, and the children’s body temperature also continued to decline.
The report said that 22 out of 28 nebulizers found to be dysfunctional. At the same time, 81 out of 111 infusions pumps were not working, and the situation of para monitor and pulse oximeters also reduced.
What made matters worse was the absence of an oxygen pipeline in the hospital, which supplies oxygen to children with the help of cylinders. ICU conditions have also described in the report as weak.
