Indian Railways Gets India’s first 12,000 HP Electric Engine

Railways successfully ran its most powerful ‘Made In India’ engine of 12000 HP (Horse Power). It is a proud moment for the Indian Railways. India is the sixth such country in the world, which has joined the prestigious club of countries making more Horse Power engines indigenously. For the first time in the world, the engine of the High Horse Power-operated on a long rail line.

This engine has produced under the Indian Railways via ‘Make In India’ program. The engine manufactured by Madhepura Electric Locomotive Private Limited (MELPL) operated from Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Junction. These engines are state-of-the-art IGBT based, 3-Phase Drive and 12000 Horse Power Electronic Engine. These high horsepower engines will help reduce congestion on highly used tracks by increasing the average speed and loading capacity of freight trains.

The engine name is WAG12 number 60027. The rail engine made its first run between Deendayal Upadhyay Station to Shivpur on May 18, 2020, with 118 wagons attached. The Madhepura factory is the largest integrated greenfield unit built with the highest standards of quality and safety. Its production capacity of 120 locomotives, this factory spread over an area of ​​250 acres.

This engine will prove to a Game Changer for the forward movement of coal trains for the Dedicated Freight Corridor. The engine can closely be monitored via GPS for its strategic use through the software and Antenna engaged in it. The driver can closely track via GPS.

The engine is capable of operating on railway tracks with conventional OHE lines as well as dedicated Dedicated Freight Corridor with very high OHE lines. The engine has air-conditioned Driver cab on either side—this engine equipped with a regenerative braking system that ensures substantial energy savings during operation.

Being one of the most powerful electronic engines in the world, it will increase the speed of goods trains. It will ensure movement of faster, safer and heavier freight trains across the country than ever before, which will reduce traffic congestion. A township has also set up at Madhepura in Bihar with a factory. This factory capacity to manufacture 120 locomotives per year.

This project will create more than 10,000 Direct and Indirect Jobs in the country. The company already invested more than Rs 2000 crore in the project. Along with this factory, socio-economic development in Madhepura is a new impetus by this project.
