Mithali Raj: India’s chances at Women’s T20 WC 2023 will depend on its top-order

Mithali Raj

Mithali Raj, an Indian batting legend, stated that India’s chances at the Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 will be determined by its top order.

Former India captain Smriti Mandhana is a “match winner,” and skipper Harmanpreet Kaur is in “good form,” according to the former captain.

“The top order will be crucial to India’s chances. Smriti Mandhana is a match winner and is playing well. Harmanpreet Kaur has also looked in good form, but if we are to beat Australia and England, we will need other batters to show up “Mithali stated in an ICC column.

Mithali Raj added that Shafali Verma and Richa Ghosh, who were part of the winning U19 T20 World Cup side, will be coming in with lots of experience  playing in South African conditions. She further said India’s bowling will be tested and as such, it needs to improve to achieve success in South Africa.

“I hope Shafali Verma and Richa Ghosh also have a good run at the World Cup considering they have gained so much experience of the conditions in South Africa. The bowling will be tested and that is where we need to see an improvement. I am excited about some of the young players coming through and there is some talent in the Under-19s team which I had the chance to see play at the inaugural ICC Under-19s Women’s T20 World Cup,” she said.

Mithali further said that she is hoping that the Women’s Premier League (WPL) will help in the development of players.

“I am hoping that the WPL will also help with player development. We have seen at the Under-19 World Cup how much young talent there is around the world and how players are already benefiting from the number of televised matches and the chance to play alongside big names in domestic cricket,” Mithali said.
